The Chicago Hub began in 2013 with an inaugural class and we've added three more cohorts since then. We believe our diversity is a key strategic asset: we represent Chicago's amazing neighborhoods (Hyde Park to Edgewater), count as our members Shapers from across the world (Chennai to Venice to Tel Aviv), work and study in a variety industries (private to public sector, entrepreneurs to graduate students and everything in between), and boast a multitude of pizza predilections (deep-dish, thin-crust, and yes, even New York-style). We're more than a cohort of young professionals committed to changing Chicago for the better. Whether through targeted service events, city excursions, weekend working sessions, impromptu coffees or late-night dance parties, we've grown into a tight-knit group of advisers and friends. We hold a monthly event and a monthly call for bonding and operational purposes. We have two extensive yearly retreats in the Fall and Spring to onboard new members, assess the Hub's activities, address governance, grow closer as a group and plan/progress our yearly impact projects. Each year, we select a set of impact projects that directly connect to improving the lives of Chicagoans. In 2014-2015, we worked with My Block, My Hood, My City to develop organizational capabilities, scale operations, and execute cross-neighborhood excursions for underserved Chicago students. In 2015-2016, we pursued two impact projects: one enhanced the voices of Chicago youth via podcast storytelling in partnership with StoryCorps and the other tackles youth unemployment by partnering with LeadersUp to develop training & curricula that empower youth interviewing for and navigating a new job. In 2016-2017, we are engaged in several new impact projects including an initiative to close the global gender leadership and equity gap, an initiative to create awareness, dialogue and education for pertinent topics impacting Chicago youth, and an initiative to bring life changing education abroad to youth by providing travel experiences as well as guidance on planning and budgeting for travel.
