A Peace Culture

In September 2021, in collaboration with several other hubs (Puebla, Mexicali, Aguascalientes, Morelia and Leon) we had a workshop on the topic: "Global Peace Index in Mexico" lead by Carlos Juarez, Mexico director of the Institute for Economics and Peace.

The workshop was followed by a social media campaign focused on gender violence against women starting October 18th. We also organized a Meet-The-Leader with Eunice Aguirre, co-founder of MARA: Espacios Seguros and women's rights activist via Facebook live. The collaboration with Eunice continued with an internal workshop: "Promoting safe comunities via female support networks" for the hub members.

The closing event for this initiative was a Personal Defense Workshop exclusive for women that took place in the Botanical Garden of our hometown in which MARA Espacios Seguros trained 15 women in useful defense techniques.

Project goals

1. Develop an inter-hub collaboration based on common objectives.

2. Start with internal training to foster a deep understanding of the problem in order to help women in need, particularly because the hub is composed by mostly women.

3. Create an interactive experience that helps women feel more secure in a city where gender violence against woman is a big issue.

4. Establish an alliance with a clever organization dedicated to create safe spaces for women in our city, and promote it on our social media so that citizens know how to reach them anonymously.

Project Impact:

1. The inter-hub workshop was attended by 6 hubs, including ourselves.

2. The social media campaign consisted of 6 posts.

3. The Facebook Live talk with Eunice was viewed by 557 people on Facebook and shared 27 more times.

4. The internal workshop was attended by all hub members and it was a very meaningful experience as we are mostly women.

5. The Personal Defense workshop was an incredible and useful experience for 15 women in which they learnt basic concepts of self defense and now have the opportunity to either defend themselves or other women.
