Addressing Misinformation in Indonesia's 2024 Elections (PINTAR)

Project Problem Statement: Misinformation and other information disorders peak during election periods. With young voters representing 52% of the voter base in the upcoming Indonesian general elections, it is critical that young voters are equipped with the skills to detect and identify misinformation that may be affecting their opinion or views, and therefore their votes.

Project Target Group: The hub is targeting youth between 17-25, particularly first-time voters in the upcoming general elections.

Project's Proposed Solution: The hub has designed curriculum and teaching materials about the Indonesian general elections, as well as key insights and strategies to identify and address misinformation, disinformation, and mal-information. The hub will be delivering this curriculum and teaching materials in a series of in-person workshops throughout December 2023-February 2024. In addition to workshops, the hub will also be conducting a survey to assess media and information literacy amongst youth.

Hub activities:

  • Designed a curriculum and teaching materials, through consultations with a number of media and information literacy experts including the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Indonesia, BijakMemilih, Tempo, MAFINDO, Drone Emprit

  • Engaged community partners to co-host in-person workshop sessions (including BijakMemilih, Warga Muda)

  • Planned and conducted 1 in-person workshop, and will be conducting 2-3 more workshops in the coming months with other community partners

  • Engaged and trained community partners to conduct and facilitate the workshop

  • Engaged sponsors such as Kino and Xendit to support with refreshments and the workshop venue

  • Designed a survey with CSIS and AdvisLab that will be disseminated in December 2023

  • Designed and implemented pre and post-workshop surveys to measure project impact

Short-Term Goals:

  • Increase in participants' skills and confidence towards media and information literacy

  • Increase in participant's awareness about the Indonesian 2024 General Elections

  • Increase general youths' awareness of media and information literacy skills, beyond the election period

  • Encourage responsible media consumption and participation amongst youth, promoting a culture of informed and responsible civic participation

  • Engage youth-focused communities to continue training youth on media and information literacy skills
