AI4Health Sandbox

Over the last several years, AI has been transforming healthcare from robotic surgery to 3D image analysis. The potential for AI in healthcare is perhaps one of the most significant applications of the technology, and even more so in the developing world where there is a scarcity of human resources and infrastructure. Rwanda has been a pioneer in this space, being the first country to use drones for its national blood delivery service and through a digital first, telemedicine service for streamlining national healthcare delivery.

However, there is still huge potential to use AI to close the gaps in the health sector, and perhaps to leapfrog more advanced economies with innovative regulations and approaches to tech-enabled clinical interventions. In order to unlock opportunities for innovation in this space, there are two primary factors to address:

  1.           Trusted and secure data sharing frameworks

  2.            Agile regulation.

It is for these reasons that the C4IR will be leading a multi-institutional effort to create an AI4Health Sandbox, which will provide a safe and regulated environment through which innovators and researchers collaborate with the regulator to test new and innovative healthcare products and services and corresponding regulations.
