Air Quality Schools

Problem Statement

People in Valencia need good air quality in order to maximise their health. They also need to know the quality of the air that they are breathing in order to act consequently.

Target Group

The population of Valencia.

Proposed Solution

Our solution consists of coordinating the stable generation of publicly available data about the air quality of Valencia. During our piloting stage, the data will be generated from school areas.

Hub Activities

We have researched which companies and associations related to air quality in Valencia could potentially collaborate with us, and we are currently investigating ways in which parent associations in schools could support our future proposal to the local government.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results

Our short-term goal is to have a solid implementation and funding plan that is backed by the local government and relevant local associations.

In the middle-term, we want to implement the pipeline that stably generates and analyses the relevant data. This will involve installing sensors in selected schools and implementing a data-analysis pipeline.

We have two long-term goals. Our first goal is that the generated data influences policy in Valencia that ultimately improves the local air quality. The second goal is to increase the awareness about the importance of breathing clean air among children in schools, and to let them take part in the data generating process somehow (e.g. by calibrating sensors or brainstorming about how to improve air quality based on the data-driven conclusions reached).

Available Metrics

In the short-term, the implementation plan should be for at least 1-2 schools and should have a clear timeline where all the actors are clearly defined and have committed to their assigned tasks. Funding should also be secured.

In the middle-term, we should have sensors installed in 1-2 schools and we should reach clear conclusions based on the data generated by them.

In the long-term, policy that is based on our generated data should be associated with an improvement of the air quality of the monitored school areas based on our data. Also, most children in the schools that are participating in the project should have been explained the importance of breathing clean air, and should have participated in at least one interactive workshop related to the project.

The specific overall timeline is still unclear.
