ARTUS: Artification of Urban Spaces in Stuttgart

The Stuttgart Climate Innovation Council has selected ten innovative ideas from 39 project applications for funding, which are now being implemented in Stuttgart - one of them, lead by Global shapers Stuttgart Hub is ARTUS.

The core of the project is to develop and pilot public spaces that encourage a shift to climate neutral mobility through innovation design.

To facilitate climate action and transformation of mobility systems in Stuttgart post-pandemic, it is important to create a new understanding and enthusiasm for public space and not a dogmatic either-or between cars and sustainable transport. The future lies in the new design of traffic spaces that ensure the compatibility of all road users and do not function through prohibitions, but through motivation, fun and empathy.

The international trends show how important design innovations are in environmental education and in promoting behavioural change in the built environment. With support from researchers, and through a co-creative approach, areas (streets, squares, parking areas, ...) will be selected, ideas developed according to needs and artistically implemented with the involvement of local actors and businesses. In addition, the development will be consolidated through the use of the spaces (e.g. smaller events) and the involvement of other stakeholders from the local economy, the desire for public space is to be rekindled and scaled in the coming years.

The project is being implemented by in collaboration with Fraunhofer IAO and other local partners.

The goal of the project is to transform 0.1% of Stuttgart's traffic areas - about 2.5 football fields - into (temporary) social meeting spaces with a high quality of public life and, above all, high design quality through colour, patterns and graphics by 2023.
