Bridging with Books and Libraries

Problem statement

The problem in Uttarakhand's rural areas is limited access to education due to the high costs of books and school fees. Additionally, outdated materials hinder students' learning, which the hub aims to address by providing books and establishing free libraries in underprivileged schools.

Target group

The project primarily targets socio-economically disadvantaged students residing in rural and slum areas within Uttarakhand. This initiative, initially launched in Dehradun, aims to support those lacking the financial means to access quality education. Furthermore, it extends its focus to schools with limited resources, unable to afford modern study materials for their students.

Proposed solution

The proposed solution for this project entails the provision of donated books to students facing financial constraints and the establishment of complimentary libraries in underserved schools. This initiative seeks to broaden educational accessibility for these targeted groups. Moreover, it aims to offer additional support, including essentials like food and clothing, as needed, through donations from compassionate individuals willing to contribute.

Hub activities

The core activities of the project involve the initial step of raising awareness within the community, urging individuals to donate books and other items that may be of value to underprivileged students. This awareness-building will be facilitated through school and college engagements, as well as leveraging digital platforms such as the collaborator's website and popular social media channels including Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. Once donations begin to accumulate, the subsequent phase encompasses field visits to rural areas and disadvantaged schools, during which the specific requirements are assessed, and relevant donations are disbursed. Moreover, the project encourages individuals to identify areas, students, or schools in need of assistance via the website, prompting the hub to conduct on-site assessments and provide necessary support.

Project goals

The short-term objectives of this project encompass the distribution of books and essential supplies to underserved regions in Dehradun. Subsequently, the initiative intends to expand its reach across various locations within Uttarakhand through strategic collaborations with diverse regional organizations operating throughout the state.

Long-term goals include the establishment of enduring, self-sustaining libraries and support systems in these areas, fostering a culture of learning and empowerment. By systematically extending its reach, the project seeks to affect a positive, lasting impact on education and welfare within Uttarakhand.

In addition to this, the hub would also like to incorporate the following in the project:

  • Rural Area Development Support: committed to the upliftment of rural communities, the mission centers on enhancing the quality of life and economic prosperity in these regions.

  • Women Empowerment: the hub is dedicated to fostering an environment where women can confidently steer their personal and professional development.

  • Environmental Stewardship: recognizing the paramount importance of a balanced environment, the hub is a staunch advocate for environmental initiatives. The project acknowledges the intricate interdependence between humanity and nature, aligning with sustainable practices to ensure harmonious coexistence.

Available metrics

To date, the project has successfully distributed books to approximately 50 children, benefiting two distinct slum areas in Dehradun, each housing roughly 20-30 children. The hub's aspiration is to extend this impact, reaching over 500 children in need and establishing a minimum of 10 complimentary libraries across 10 separate underprivileged schools. These desired outputs and impact metrics signify the hub's commitment to expanding educational access and promoting literacy in a substantial and enduring manner.
