C4C-Call for Climate Action

The environment suffers because people lack knowledge but in turn, people will suffer because of climate change. Year 2021 alone temperatures rose by 3-5 Degrees Celsius in some regions of Zimbabwe and there was a gradual decrease in rainfall by about 12%. In 2021, Zimbabwe was ranked very high in the Global Climate Risk Index and the latest evidence suggests that Zimbabwe will continue to warm up through 2080. Open spaces have turned into plastic and paper dumping sites. As a result, residents and even Chitungwiza City Council workers resort to burning these sites in order to get rid of them thereby causing air pollution. The emission of carbon dioxide into the air has been one of the greatest causes of acid rain. Acid rain damages vegetables and even lowers the quality of soil of agricultural products. Climate change is a threat to children’s survival, access to health care, education, and even development. One of the greatest ways to achieve many of the 17 Sustainable Goals of the United Nations is to Call For Climate Action (C4C). Improvement in climate action reduces poverty, hunger, and water scarcity. It will also improve access to health care, education, and development. The project aims to engage all local residents of Chitungwiza and the Chitungwiza City Council. We also wish to put children at the center of the climate change response, prioritizing and empowering them as changers.

Proposed Solution and Hub activities:

  • Raise awareness in the community by holding campaigns twice to thrice a month.

  • Visit schools and hold workshops to educate children on climate changes and its effects

  • Facilitate the formation of C4C (Call 4 Climate Action) clubs in Chitungwiza

  • Partner with Environment Africa in planting trees in schools and in open spaces.

  • Engage with Chitungwiza City Council to do refuse collection weekly

  • Build bins in streets which will be emptied every day

  • Partner with Recycle Today and Mbare Recycling Bay to recycle plastics.

  • Holding the Climate Art and Climate writing competition in the community.

  • Partner with the Zimbabwe Republic of Police in enforcing that if anyone dumps waste at inappropriate sites, they will pay a fine and serve some time in the cells.

The hope is that by working on the goals listed above, the environment conservation and climate change adaptation; will help with the maintenance of essential ecological systems. In addition to the long-term goals, issues like air pollution and consumption of resources are reduced.
