Careers in Colour
Problem Statement: Although those who have non-European and Indigenous backgrounds make up 24 per cent of the Australian population, such backgrounds only account for 5 per cent of senior leaders. Visible role models that people can identify with are crucial to supporting growth and success in the workplace - yet in many Australian workplaces, there is a clear lack of racial and cultural representation at the leadership level.
Target Group: The hub supports people of colour by providing pathways to effect positive change in their careers, workplaces, and beyond.
Proposed solution: Focusing on industries of influence, the solution is three-fold.
- The hub runs community-building initiatives focused on a variety of lived experiences and industries/sectors of influence.
- The hub leads a coalition of Employee Advocacy Groups (EAGs) supporting people of colour to drive collective impact across Australian workplaces.
- The hub provides pathways to engage in broader thought leadership, advocacy, and values-aligned communities
Hub activities: The hub is presently involved in organising ongoing community-building events across a range of sector, providing administrative and governance support to the community-of-practice, and partnering with broader values-aligned organisations focused on cultural diversity and racial justice.
Goals:
- Short term - The hub aims to provide a central platform for people of colour in Australia working across multiple sectors to build community, share knowledge, and drive collective impact in Australian workplaces.
- Long-term - The hub aims to contribute to a future where Australian workplaces reflect the diversity of the broader Australian community, provide equitable opportunities, and maximise the potential of our multicultural workforce.
Metrics:
- People Engagement - The hub aims to measure the number of people engaged with the project initiatives by sector across events, programs, and other initiatives. To date, the hub has engaged over 300+ people in events and initiatives, and the Employee Advocacy Group (EAG) leaders of over 10 leading Australian organisations.
- Policy Change - The hub aims to track the number of organisations adopting recommended policy changes in the policy centre of excellence. Collaborators have successfully implemented CALD targets at the Prime Minister & Cabinet, and drove forward business cases at the Reserve Bank of Australia.
