Problem Statement: 

On February 6th 2023 two earthquakes with magnitudes 7.7 and 7.6 hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria. In the aftermath more than 9000 aftershocks hit the region. These earthquakes caused devastating effects in a region already beset by turmoil from the 12-year conflict in Syria and the ongoing refugee crisis:

more that 50.000 people have been killed

more than 100.000 people have been injured

more than 2 million people have been displaced

some 20 million people have been affected in Turkey and estimated 9 million in Syria

After two week of rescue teams desperately working to locate additional survivors there is also a huge need to support the organizations active on ground comprising more than 250.000 people to carry out recovery efforts and support survivors.

Proposed Solution: 

In order for the people in the affected regions to be provided with the help they need - food, shelter, medic and psychological support, etc. organizations that are active on the ground and directly support the affected people need to have access to resources. While they are the experts to work in the affected regions all we can do to help relief efforts is donate money to reliable organizations. We have identified and contacted two organizations - UNICEF Austria and the Austrian Red Cross - to raise funds for their work in the earthquake affected regions. 

Hub Activities: 

After identifying two reliable organizations that have divisions in Austria and are active on the ground in the earthquake affected regions both in Syria and Turkiye we organized a charity event to raise donations. For the charity event we collaborated with 14 diverse artists providing their time and talent for this cause by offering performances in music, dance and poetry to the 100-people audience. 100% of all donations went directly to these two organizations. This was possible thanks to partners covering all costs of the event and providing us with the venue, refreshments and goodies to say thank you. 

We were able to raise 2020€ that were equally divided and directly donated to UNICEF and the Austrian Red Cross for their relief activities in Turkiye and Syria.

Available Metrics:

We hosted one three hour event with 14 artists raising funds for two organizations’ relief activities in Syria and Turkiye. We welcomed 100 guests in audience and were able to collect 2020€ in donations.
