Chicago Migrant Crisis Support

Problem Statement

Since August 2022, more than 37,000 migrants have been relocated to Chicago from the southern border of Texas, sparking what is now labeled as "the migrant crisis." This unplanned influx has strained resources and stirred tensions among long-standing residents. Efforts led by grassroots organizations and local authorities have primarily focused on providing essential services. However, these endeavors, while commendable, have triggered resentment among native Chicagoans, predominantly from underprivileged neighborhoods, where migrants are resettled. The Chicago chapter of the Global Shapers is addressing this crisis by prioritizing the provision of basic necessities and fostering inclusive communities.

Target Group

With a population of 2.7 million, Chicago aims to integrate the 37,000 migrants, predominantly from Venezuela and Central and South America, into its diverse community.

Proposed Solution

Our strategy involves a multi-layered approach. Initially, we're mobilizing resources through community donations, aiming to meet immediate needs while fostering empathy through shared narratives. Additionally, we're launching a storytelling initiative to bridge cultural gaps and promote understanding. Finally, we plan to initiate a "community lunch series," where migrant families share their stories, fostering connections with neighbors and community leaders.

Hub Activities

Through partnerships with local NGOs, we've organized clothing drives and established an Amazon Wishlist for essential supplies. We're also aiding migrants in accessing legal assistance for Temporary Protected Status. Independently, we're amplifying migrant voices through storytelling, combating misinformation, and maintaining a digital resource list.

Short and Long-Term Goals

In the short term, we're focused on meeting immediate needs, especially as shelters face eviction deadlines. Long-term, we aim to foster empathy and solidarity within Chicago's diverse community through ongoing initiatives like the community lunch series.

Available Metrics

We're tracking donations received via the Amazon Wishlist, Linktree analytics, volunteer hours, and the number of migrants served in partnership with local organizations.

Project Collaborators

Our partnerships include New Life Centers, the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, local police districts, and Project Vida. Through collaborative efforts, we're addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by the migrant crisis.
