Clean Start: Breaking Taboos, building futures

Problem Statement

Period poverty remains a pervasive issue in Soweto, where a significant number of individuals face challenges in accessing affordable and hygienic menstrual hygiene products, leading to adverse health effects and hindrance to overall well-being.

Target Group

Our project, Clean Start, is dedicated to supporting girls and women in Soweto, particularly those facing economic hardships, by providing them with essential menstrual hygiene products and education on proper menstrual health practices.

Proposed Solution

Clean Start adopts a multi-faceted approach to combat period poverty. We distribute free menstrual hygiene products, organize educational workshops to raise awareness about menstrual health, and work towards fostering sustainable solutions for long-term impact.

Hub Activities

  • Product Distribution: Provide free menstrual hygiene products to identified communities.

  • Educational Workshops: Conduct workshops on menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, and empowerment.

  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with local leaders and community organizations to ensure widespread reach.

  • Sustainable Solutions: Advocate for and establish sustainable solutions, such as local production or recycling initiatives.

Short and Long-Term Goals

Short-term: Distribute menstrual hygiene products to 1,000 individuals within the first six months. Conduct educational workshops reaching 500 girls and women in the initial phase.

Long-term: Establish a sustainable model for local production or recycling of menstrual hygiene products. Create a network of empowered individuals who serve as advocates for menstrual health within their communities.
