Compost in Dorms

Composting combats climate change by cutting down on greenhouse gases entering the atmosphere and diverting organic waste from entering landfills and incinerators. Winnipeg is currently the largest city in Canada without a municipal compost program. In Winnipeg, composting is not widely available and people do not have a lot of information how to do it - especially students who live in dormitories.

Winnipeg Hub is raising awareness of the benefits and ease of composting among students living in dorms on the University of Manitoba campus.

Activities include:

  • Creating posters and how-to-compost guidelines to share in dorms

  • Shared information with students during the campus sustainability week and dorm orientation night

  • Convening meetings for NGOs who are providing composting services who can collaborate with the university
