Coronavirus Makers

Thursday 16th of March, a group of 800 Spanish makers (engineers, designers and geek & techies) decided to start a group in Telegram to think about how we could help our heroes: doctors, policemen and people working during the quarantine in Spain.

Today, the Coronavirus Makers group in Spain has MORE THAN 17.000 members, divided into different cities and neighbourhoods. All things decentralized, without one management or leadership team. Madrid Hub Shapers are helping with our 3D Printers, resources and network to additional Madrid makers groups (+6.000 makers). We had the support of Isabel Diaz Ayuso (Community of Madrid President) and we started a massive social media communication campaign with more than +1M impressions and +200K RTs on Twitter!. The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, mentioned this project in the official speech to the country.

We are working on three workstreams:

1. 3D printed facial shields. Really easy to do on a large scale with our 3D printers and using PVC for the shield. Up to today, we delivered more than 450.000 facial masks and we are working to produce them faster and with more comfortable designs for users. Companies such as Leroy Merlin, PcComponentes, BQ, Renault, KPMG and SAP are helping us with resources to print more units.

2. Adaptors for respiratory filters and automatic respirators using Snorkeling Masks (donated by Decathlon Spain, who are working with us. You can see photos of this project in the folder. Our next stage in the maker community is to help with intensive care units.

3. Automatic Respirators for hospitals. The Asturias group and Seat Automotive Company are leading this workstream, with the official collaboration of the Spanish Health & Safety Ministry.
