Impact

DECÍDETE MÉXICO Toluca

Problem Statement

The low political engagement among young people in Mexico, poses a substantial barrier to building a fair and resilient democracy. Especially in the State of Mexico, the participation of young citizens has a great impact and carries a great responsibility both at the state and at federal level, since this is the state with the highest percentage of population of the country with more than 16 million people, of which approximately 3.5 million are between the ages of 18 and 29 years and have the right to vote, representing almost 30% of the nominal list of the State of Mexico.

Target Group

Young people between 18 and 29 years old, focus on first-time voters who live, work and/or study in Toluca and its surroundings. For being the largest city and capital of the State of Mexico.

Proposed Solution

The goal is to provide information on informed voting, acquainting individuals with the electoral process, their responsibilities as citizens, and the benefits of civic participation, emphasizing how it makes a difference in our state.

Hub Activities

We will organize forums with the objective of motivating and encouraging the youth of our state to vote in an informed and conscious manner, but also to recognize their responsibilities as citizens in order to apply critical thinking and demand the fulfillment of commitments from our governors once they are elected. The forums will be moderated by experts in electoral matters, curating the information with the help of our Hub so that it is imparted in a way that appeals more to young people and is of greater understanding. In addition to the informative part, we will seek to create a dynamic space in which people feel involved and listened to so that we can integrate the valuable diversity of opinions.

The most important activities to be carried out are:

  • Contact with the universities to create an alliance in which they can provide a physical space for the forums and also give us access to their students to invite them to participate. (In process).

  • Contact experts in electoral matters to act as speakers and moderators of the forums. (In process: Contact with the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Mexico (TEEM) and the Electoral Institute of the State of Mexico (IEEM).

  • An invitation will be extended to young people of voting age, focusing on first-time voters. A register will be kept to better control attendance and measure results.

  • After the event, a form will be sent to obtain feedback from participants in order to improve the forums on future occasions.

Short and long-term goals

Short term: To note, in addition to high attendance, a genuine interest of the young participants in the information provided in the forums and a high level of participation.

Long term: To get more young people involved in the electoral processes but also in the political and governmental activities of our State and our country, observing more informed and motivated young people to actively participate as committed citizens. We would also like to replicate the forums at every opportunity so that they are recognized as a safe space with reliable information on electoral matters for young people.

Available Metrics

  • Number of events: Conduct from the moment to the election date, at least 3 forums in different venues.

  • Attendance: achieve at least 30 attendees per forum.

  • Feedback: Achieve at least 90% of responses to the form at the end of the event, where we can observe the level of participation and involvement of the attendees.

  • Voting: Through a survey, measure the percentage of participation of the attendees in the electoral process, seeking to have an idea of the impact of the forum on the voting decision of young people.
