Each One Teach One

Executive Summary:

The project Each One Teach One, with the banner “ Foster the Future” is a free learning centre established on 1st May, 2018, at Nagabazar colony, Kohima. This was initiated with the objective to provide free and accessible quality education to the less privileged children coming from struggling economic and financial background. Given the agrarian economy of the state, the inability of students in engaging private tutors or tuitions due to financial crisis and high cost of private tutors, has disabled and affected vastly the accessibility to equitable equality education. Understanding that education is of the the most fundamental and essential backbone in shaping the future generation, and recognising the prevalence of a glaring gap in basic reading and writing levels, and school drop outs amongst students from this locality, the tuition centre was started, to inspire and enable the students to improve their oratory skills, writing skills, academic performances, and to inculcate artistic and moral values, and an ethos of creative and passionate learning in students. The learning centre emphasises on individual focus and attention, and provides proper care and assistance to every child, and catering to the needs of the individual learners. Apart from the free education, the learning centre also focuses on learner-centred and the techniques of story-telling, reading story books, learning music and life skills like crafts, and learning through games, thereby, making the teaching-learning process innovative, participatory, engaging, creative and effective for the students; bringing about development of all three domains of learning-cognitive, affective and pyscho-motor.

Problem Statement:

The prevalence and difficulty in bridging gap between accessible quality education especially for children coming from poor socio economic background has remained one of the biggest challenge in the urban-rural divide. With concerted efforts, to address school drop outs, improve the learning skills of the children, paving way for further skill development, this learning centre was established for innovative approaches by the Kohima Hub.

Target Group:

The learning centre caters to children and students from different ages groups and standards (elementary school, primary school, high school), who cannot afford the high cost of tuition fee or engage private tutors: school drop outs.

Proposed Solution:

The learning centre proposes to address the rate of school drops around the locality, it is also motivated in providing skills based learning to children, capacity building and providing guidance for mentorship, and having an over-all concept of inclusive education by bringing students together in one class room, regardless of their gender, strengths or weaknesses in any area, and seeks to maximise the potential of all the students.

Emphasis is also made on enabling all learners to acquire the knowledge, skills, spiritual and moral values that are positive progression and indicators for personal development of each individual children in the centre.

Hub Activities:

The Kohima Hub has been engaged in keeping the Each One Teach One learning centre accommodative and running the project. Due to the grappling reality of lack in financial resource, the Kohima Hub organised a fund drive and crowd campaign to pull in resources and monetary support to sustain the learning centre. With generous contributions from well wishes and anonymous donors, an overall amount of INR 235000 was raised which was essential in looking after the logistics of the tuition centre, basic amenities, basic infrastructure and facilities etc. The hub has been pivotal in facilitating the learning centre so as to ensure that all the children in the centre, their needs in achieving quality education are being addressed. Shapers have also been participative in learning activities with the children in the centre, apart from just imparting formal ways of education, understanding the needs and design that every individual children have different abilities and potential.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results

The learning centre by far has been able to impact and reach out to over 100 students from the locality, and currently caters to about 45-50 students enrolled both in government and private schools. The Kohima Hub is motivated in opening such other learning centre in other localities/ colonies and aims at impacting over 500 plus students under Kohima District gravitating to achieve equality and equal education. Apart from Kohima District, the Shapers also have commitments in carrying this project to other rural pockets of the State, where accessibility to quality education in the public education system, has remained a big challenge for the children, affecting the overall academic progress and developments of the children. With the goals and motivation intact, one of the most pressing and challenges faced with the pandemic situation, physical execution at the learning centre has remained a big challenge in catering to the needs of the children, with restrictions being imposed on movements, and several other Standard Operating Protocols directed by the State agencies across the State.

Available Metrics:

At present, the centre has around 50 students, from private as well as government schools. The centre has provides tuition on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 16:30 hours till 17:30 hours and often extended till 18:00 hours or beyond when certain students need additional help. The learning centre aims to impact over 500 plus school children in the next coming years.

Through the Each One Teach One project, many students are able to benefit academically as well as drive improvements in their character/behavior. Most of the students come from families where discipline and attention are not given much importance. After being a part of this centre, many positive behavioral changes were observed from the students as told by the parents during home visitations. A wonderful testimony was given by a father of one of the students, stating that he stopped drinking alcohol after his son requested him not to drink. The student had learnt the spiritual and moral values from the centre. Find more success stories below:
