Employability program to strengthen capabilities for job placement

Problem statement

Youths in Lima, Peru need to strengthen their job search skillset so that they can find jobs aligned to their professional interests and fulfill their professional aspirations.

Target group

Undergraduate students of business-related career interests from low and middle-income backgrounds from two universities located in Lima.

Proposed solution

An employability program tailored to the students’ specific needs that included the following topics:

  1. How to search for jobs in an effective manner

  2. How to strengthen my resume and personal profile

  3. How to communicate in an assertive manner

  4. How to strengthen my leadership and teamwork skills

  5. How to be successful in a job interview

Short-term goals

  • 100% of the participants in all 5 modules mentioned that they were either “Very Satisfied” or “Satisfied” with the module

  • 2 out of 7 participants that responded to the end-of-project questionnaire obtained jobs

  • 4 out of 7 participants that responded to the end-of-project questionnaire were called for 1 or 2 interviews between October and November 2020

  • 3 out of 7 participants that responded to the end-of-project questionnaire pointed out that they felt better prepared for a job interview in comparison with the start of the program

  • 100% of the participants that responded to the questionnaire stated that the program was useful for job search opportunities

Long term change

The project team expects to improve the number of interviews the students get for each job they apply for and for them to earn a job in the following 6 – 9 months. The project was structured with a low number of participants because it was conceptualized as a pilot. However, even though results were good, scarcity of volunteers limited the scalability of the project.
