Engaging Youth in Climate Advocacy: The Namami Gange Program as a Case Study

Global Shaper Community Varanasi Hub presents its meticulously crafted research study program tailored for a select group of 10 bright students from BHU. This month-long expedition will see these students actively engage in a comprehensive field study of the renowned Namami Gange program, a flagship initiative by the Government of India dedicated to the noble cause of cleaning and rejuvenating the river Ganga.

The primary objective for this field visit is to assess the program's overall effectiveness, analyzing its performance across three crucial components:

  1. Public awareness

  2. River surface cleaning

  3. Afforestation

The Namami Gange program encompasses a multitude of focus areas, making this evaluation an indispensable step toward gauging its real impact on the environment and society.,Under the guidance of experienced mentors and in collaboration with local stakeholders, the students will delve deep into the intricacies of public awareness campaigns, examining their reach, resonance, and efficacy in instilling a sense of responsibility toward the river's conservation. Simultaneously, they will participate in and closely scrutinize the river surface cleaning efforts, evaluating the efficiency of various cleaning methods employed and their overall impact on Ganga's purity.

Moreover, the program places due emphasis on the vital aspect of afforestation, recognizing the role of green cover in the river's ecological restoration. Our students will closely observe and assess afforestation initiatives, looking into the diversity of tree species planted, their survival rates, and the potential benefits they bring to the environment and local communities.

By conducting this rigorous research study, Varanasi Hub aims to provide insights and recommendations to further enhance the effectiveness of the Namami Gange program.

The program aims to have a multifaceted impact, with a focus on:

  1. Empowering youth to take action on climate by deepening their understanding of river ecosystem reclamation, the central focus of the country's foremost program. This will be achieved through on-ground research studies.

  2. Showcasing and promoting local initiatives that are driving significant systemic changes through innovative and effective solutions and practices.

  3. Fostering collaboration and collective action among various stakeholders to achieve the objectives outlined in the Namami Gange program. This will be accomplished through meaningful discourse and citizen-led activism, encouraging more active participation from different actors.

  4. By enhancing youth engagement, highlighting local success stories, and promoting collaboration, the program strives to create a substantial and sustainable impact on the restoration of river ecosystems and the overall success of the Namami Gange program.
