Erbil Recycling Initiative

Erbil Hub continues to work on the first recycling project in Erbil with the objective of raising awareness on the environmental impact of plastic and creating recycling mentality in the city – through re-engineering the collection system that links users to the recyclers. Launched in 2018, the project partnered with a global development organization which provided $10,000 funding. It is implemented by installing recycling bins and large containers in universities and partnering with local recycling companies to collect and recycle the plastic bottles. For the first year, the project targeted around 30,000 university students and reduced the amount of plastic disposal in the city by 500 kg per month and 2.5 tons of plastic per year. Erbil shapers and a group of 34 volunteers have been involved to implement and monitor its implementation. Among its other activities were meeting local stakeholders to advocate for recycling policies as well, awareness sessions in universities, distributing printed promotional materials, and a social media campaign in which many celebrities and local actors participated.Erbil Hub continues to work on the first recycling project in Erbil with the objective of raising awareness on the environmental impact of plastic and creating recycling mentality in the city – through re-engineering the collection system that links users to the recyclers.
