Flood Relief Project

Project Rationale:

In the summer of 2022, unprecedented torrential downpours have triggered some of the most severe floods in Pakistan. According to UNICEF, the flood has left around 3.4 million children in need of assistance and shelter and at increased risk of waterborne diseases, drowning, and malnutrition. The flood has destroyed a significant amount of infrastructure, breaching river banks and destroying bridges, schools and villages whole. The flood affectees by the numbers, since June, include 33 million+ affectees; 1300+ fatalities; 735,000+ livestock lost; 3,500km+ of paved roads destroyed; 2.5+ million acres of crops affected; and 325,000+ houses destroyed.

Project' Purpose:

The Global Shapers Peshawar Hub initiated its Flood Relief Project in June 2022. The project gained speed as one of the few relief initiatives reaching some of the more far-flung areas of Pakistan that had been devastated by the flood. Activities and relief in this area were conducted after thorough research and meticulous planning. The project reached affectees in four provinces of Pakistan: Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Targeted Audience:

The goal was to reach the flood-affected communities that would otherwise receive government and non-profit driven aid after considerable time, owing to lack of knowledge and/or geographic proximity. The short term aim was to equip the masses initially with food items and other medicines in emergency phase, and by doing so, the aim was also to encourage and enable them for the longer recovery phase.

Global Shapers Peshawar Hub has been committed to doing its part in aiding the flood affectees all over Pakistan since June. As part of the worldwide initiative, it is our responsibility to prioritize the most pressing challenges in our community and country and ponder the challenge itself - and also the limitations hindering efforts to reverse it. The ongoing flood catastrophe is a stark reminder of who bears the brunt of natural disasters. The country's poorest and vulnerable find themselves, once again, in a pool of neglect amplified by an unprecedented disaster. At Global Shapers Peshawar Hub, Shapers believe that the past summer is a glaring reminder of climate change and its sheer magnitude of effects on the world. While raising monumental concerns about the climate, the floods also spotlight where our system falls short: the lack of reliable and accessible data which can quickly connect efforts to those who need it. Shapers aim to continue this dialogue on data, climate change and their intersection in upcoming projects.
