Food Sustainability, “Root & Grow” project

Problem Statement

Although there are enough local growers and producers on the Front Range to feed our communities, the disconnect between supply and demand has led to food insecurity for Denver residents and food waste for farms and producers.

Proposed Solution and Hub Activity

Our project aims to promote and actively support sustainable food systems by directly reducing food waste and diverting it to individuals and families who are experiencing food insecurity in Denver communities.

Short & Long-term Goals/Results

  • Increase the number of volunteers to help glean by at least 20 people

  • Increase participating farms by at least two

  • Increased pounds of food diverted from landfill / waste and donated by at least 5,000 pounds (which is about 15,000 servings)

  • Increase connectivity in the Denver sustainable food systems network and increase public awareness of food waste (at least 2 events, educational or facilitating connections between sustainable food system leaders)
