Gender Shapers Project

Problem Statement: The issue we need to handle is gender inequality in Japan, particularly in Southern parts of Japan; that is, Fukuoka, where gender stereotypes remain in how men behave and who have a strong authority within the family and in society, that it is often regarded as a virtue. Additionally, Japanese law still forbids same-sex marriage and does not allow a couple to have a different surname after the marriage. In order to achieve gender equality, we need to talk and speak out about these issues more a daily basis.

Main Target: Our target is mainly from university students age to young adults who will in the workforce and just started to work. They are the potential to get married later in their lives and might face gender inequality, moreover, young people will be an influential role to change society as they have the right to vote.

Proposed Solution: One of the reasons that we are still struggling with gender inequality might be that people do not speak out when they face difficulties. People might persuade themselves situation cannot change or gender inequality is an unchangeable custom or a part of our tradition. Therefore, in our hub project, we would like to bring topics related to gender inequality into our daily conversation. Additionally, the goal of our project is not only considering gender inequality and elaborating the solutions but to think about the core of the reasons why we need to handle gender inequality and what society we would like to pursue.

Hub Activities: To deal with the remaining gender inequality in Fukuoka and Japan, our hub will organize study sessions every one or two months paces. Each session we invite the guests who work as a nursery school teacher or running a company to mitigate the gender role which provides mothers with sharing the childcare.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results: So far, the hub has held two 90 minutes study sessions with about 20 young students and adults. In the first session, we set up the basic topics such as "what is gender?" "what are the hidden gender biases in our daily lives?" or "how can we aware of unconscious biases". In the second session, we collaborated with an obstetrician and a midwife and fucus on sexuality education through the lenses of gender. The hub aims to extend the gender topics and accelerate the conversations until this year.
