Impact

GIGA Rwanda

Giga is a partnership between UNICEF and ITU that was launched in 2019 as a global initiative to connect every school to Internet by 2030, and every young person to information, opportunity and choice. It leverages global cooperation, leadership, and innovation in finance and technology to bridge the digital divide. As co-chair of the UN Broadband Commission, Rwanda supported the initiative, and was chosen to lead the implementation of Giga in Africa. Among 4179 primary and secondary schools in Rwanda, 2401 are connected to the internet while 1796 remains unconnected. Lack of electricity, computer/devices, educational content and reliable internet connectivity are among the barriers to connecting every school, which we seek to overcome as a lead country by introducing innovative and adapdative ways of connecting schools as well as its surrounding community. Upon successful pilot in Rwanda, the findings of this innovative connectivity approach will be leveraged by other countries as we strive to ensure quality education.
