Extortion in the Recruitment Contracts of Domestic Workers Countless women across East Asia fall prey to recruitment agencies that promise them the opportunity of migrant work overseas, predominantly in Hong Kong and Singapore. In return for the logistical arrangements and placement, they are extorted to repay at high interest rates, equivalent to 70 - 90 percent of their modest salaries, over a period of 6 – 12 months. The need for collective action taken by labor exporting countries to help regulate and combat unethical recruitment practices is critical. Our mission is to develop a regional media campaign to disseminate in remote rural communities of Philippines and Indonesia.
