Ibadan Climate Action

Problem Statement:

Ibadan, the largest city in West Africa, grapples with a daunting waste management challenge as its population of nearly four million generates a substantial amount of solid waste. The city's existing dumpsites are overwhelmed, leading to indiscriminate burning of refuse that emits greenhouse gases, posing risks to the environment and human health.

Target group:

Our target groups are majorly lower-income communities in Ibadan, Nigeria. This is because poor waste management, handling and disposal is majorly found among the lower-income communities in the city.

Proposed solution:

As a hub, our approach to tackling the waste management issue in Ibadan involves five key strategies. The first is by engaging with policy makers to initiate reforms in existing waste management laws and regulations. Second, partnering with recycling and clean-up agencies to establish waste collection points strategically across the city. Third, undertake awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the dangers of indiscriminate refuse burning and proper refuse disposal. Fourth, conducting workshops for school students to learn about transforming plastic into art, and for women in low-income households on converting solid waste into sustainable and eco-friendly fashion options. Finally, take a hands-on approach to remove waste from the streets by mobilising a team of volunteers and coordinating clean-up activities.

Hub activities:

1. Liaising with government officials and policy makers to overhaul poor waste management policies.

2. Sustainable fashion workshops for women in lower-income communities.

3. Plastic to Art trainings for secondary school students.

4.  Community Clean-ups.

5.  Organising waste collection points with local traders and waste management agencies.

6. Sensitisation walks on the dangers of indiscriminate refuse burning and proper waste management.

7. A Capstone sensitisation and stakeholder engagement seminar.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results:

Our short term goals are to remove waste and refuse from streets, provide climate-friendly employment & entrepreneurship opportunities, and enlighten citizens about climate action and proper refuse management.

Our long term goal is to reform state policies on waste management and to reduce GHG emissions in Ibadan.

Available Metrics:

Our first phase of the project includes reform of existing waste management policies and regulations, sustainable fashion workshops, and plastic to art training(s) for students.

We have initiated the process of engaging the relevant stakeholders. Further, the hub has successfully held two sustainable fashion training sessions on how to convert plastic and clothing waste to art.. The first session was a 7-hour workshop with 40 women of Akingbile, Moniya community, Ibadan The second training session was also a 7-hour workshop for 54 women from Ariyibi community, Apete, Ibadan. The team also provided a $100 mini-grant for 13 women to start a small scale sustainable fashion business.

We organized a street drive on September 16, 2023 in commemoration of World Clean-up day, engaging with local actors and market leaders on climate friendly waste disposal methods. 100 people benefited from the climate reality street drive which was held in partnership with Susty Vibes,  at Iwo Road Car park, Ibadan. We have also reached at least  two million people through radio campaigns that discussed the Climate Reality project on Solutions FM and Crest FM, Ibadan

The plastic to art training workshop for students is set to hold in the first quarter of 2024 while waste collection points and stakeholder engagement seminar will be executed in the second quarter of 2024.
