Job Essentials 101

Problem Statement: The job market is currently flooded with job seekers, but many employers are still struggling to find qualified candidates. This is because a significant number of job applications are of poor quality. University students lack knowledge and understanding of their future endeavors and how they will navigate the job application world after they graduate from university.

Target Group: As final-year university, students are about to enter the job market and are likely to be feeling a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of finding a job, they are the ideal target group for the project.

Proposed Solution: Addis Ababa Hub is committed to helping youth enrolled in university programs thrive in the work environment. To this end, Job Essentials 101 is helping university students learn how to navigate the world of job search. The workshop covers topics such as how to write a resume and cover letter, how to conduct a job search, and how to interview effectively.

Hub Activities: A pre-workshop survey was used to identify the needs of the participants and to design a workshop that is relevant and helpful. The survey asked questions about the university student’s knowledge, skills, and interests, as well as their goals for the workshop. The workshop was then designed in a way that is tailored to the needs of the students. The workshop is a valuable resource for university students by providing them training on resume and cover writing by experienced professionals who have expertise in the topics covered. Students also get the chance to practice their resume and cover writing skills and receive feedback from hub members. Similarly, students receive knowledge and insights from experienced professionals to help improve their interview skills. The workshop provides students with the opportunity to practice interview skills and get feedback from the instructor. This feedback helps students to identify their strengths and weaknesses and make improvements to their interview skills. The workshop is conducted in cohorts to allow students to learn from each other and from experienced professionals in a supportive environment.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results: In the short term, the project provides university students with the skills and knowledge they need to write effective resumes and cover letters, ace job interviews, search for jobs online, and network effectively. In the long term, the project is providing university students with the tools and resources they need to find a job that is a good fit for their skills and interests, develop a successful career, become more confident in their job search skills, build a strong network of contacts, and stay up-to-date on the latest job market trends.

Available Metrics: So far, the hub has held two workshops with 68 students in the first series and 35 in the second series. The hub aims to expand the workshop to the rest of the students in the coming academic year.
