Surabaya faces challenges in its waste management system, with waste collectors mixing all types of trash and sending them directly to the landfills. The closure of small waste banks has made it more difficult for locals to find places to deposit their non-organic waste, leading to a lack of motivation for waste segregation at the household level.

To address these issues, it is crucial to educate the community about the benefits of circular economy and promote their participation in waste segregation.

This may be achieved through the utilization of mobile platforms that are capable of connecting residents with their nearest waste drop-off locations. Additionally, establishing sustainable partnerships between citizens and local recyclers is essential for uninterrupted recycling processes and advancing waste management goals. These measures will help Surabaya achieve a more efficient and sustainable waste management system while encouraging responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.

The hub aims to build connection between residents with their nearest waste drop-off locations through a mobile platform and website, and encourage responsible waste disposal as a habit. From there, the chain-loop can be established with the waste actors and recyclers.

Hub activities include:

  • Developing the mobile and website platform. At this point it is available on Android https://tumbue.ai/koneksubdl

  • Updating the waste drop points, which include the active waste actors location around Surabaya

  • Monitoring the submitted waste at drop points and giving reports to its users

  • Connecting the drop points to the recyclers and waste segregators, especially the private sectors such as schools, libraries, cafes
