Land Rights Now

Mexico is a dangerous place for the environmental and climate defenders. They are facing murder, criminalization, and threats against them, their families, and their communities . Defending their human rights is important in the development of better governments and societies to support their courageous work for the common good and against corruption. Unfortunately, in 2018 at least 21 murders of human right defenders occurred, keeping the bad numbers from the prior years. That makes Mexico the fourth most dangerous place in the world to be an environmental-climate defender (CEMDA 2019). This context of extreme violence is not exclusive to Mexico, the entire region of Latin America suffers the same phenomenon. In 2017, 207 activists of the land suffer murder, 60% of this aggression happen in Latin America (CEMDA 2019). The non-governmental organizations and communities in Jalisco, a state in the west part of Mexico, are facing the same situation in form of arbitrary detentions, smear campaigns, lawsuits, theats, etc because of their work. This came from the corrupt politician, businessmen, and drug cartels through corruption. These kinds of actions against rights defenders threatens to make them quit. The Guadalajara Hub aims to promote the safe labour of human rights defenders, through the mobilization of a conscious youth that evolves from violence to a culture of peace between environmental, social and economic elements. Through one of the Hub members and his organization, Guadalajara Hub has the knowledge and local context and alliances necessary. The support of other Hub members facilitates project improvement, logistics, and impact. Based solely on internal resources, this project could become a reality with almost no need of money, but the Hub has also applied for an international grant to access funds for the activities. Equipment needed includes a place for the press conference, cellphones for the videos, paint for the murals, speakers for the public mobilization, and some impressions for the report and visual exposition, that could be conducted digitally by social networks in the event that funding is not available. The Hub faces the challenge of understanding the work of defenders and communities to identify what actions could help them in the best way both through their process (by design activities) and in the future (new actions to improve the security of defenders).
