Let’s Get Back to School

Background and Problem Statement:

Umerkot and Tharparkar districts in Pakistan face the dual challenges of climate vulnerability and extreme poverty. These difficulties contribute to the economic fragility of the region, limiting residents' access to stable employment opportunities and resulting in financial instability. This adversely affects the overall well-being and quality of life for individuals and families in Umerkot and Tharparkar. Additionally, due to limited income sources, local communities often resort to engaging their children in various forms of child labor, including agriculture, domestic work, and debt bondage. Consequently, there is a growing number of children disengaging from the education system.

To address this complex challenge, the Global Shapers Umerkot Hub, in collaboration with the Youth Leadership Center Umerkot, has initiated the incentive "Let’s Get Back to School." The primary goal is to re-enroll dropout students in school and provide them with an opportunity for a better future.

Key Activities/Steps of the Initiative:

  1. Identifying Dropout Students: Coordinating with local schools, teachers, and community members to identify students who dropped out due to financial barriers and may or may not be engaged in child labor.

  2. Mobilizing Required Resources: Mobilizing necessary resources for re-enrolling students and ensuring sustainability to prevent them from dropping out again due to financial burdens. This is achieved through community support, available government schemes/scholarships, and corporate CSR partnerships.

  3. Reenrolling and Reintegrating Students:

    1. Reenrolling students and facilitating their reintegration by providing school kits, including uniforms, bags, and stationery.

    2. Conducting workshops to make students comfortable with the school environment.

    3. Organizing engagement sessions to reintegrate them into the school system and help them connect with other kids.

    4. Offering additional support in their learning process during the initial 15 days of rejoining their schools.

Project Goal:

To reenroll 100 dropout school children in Umerkot and Tharparkar districts within 3 years.

Progress Update:

So far, the hub has successfully reenrolled and supported 30 students.
