Impact

Let's Impact - Transform by Connecting

Problem Statement

In Mexico, 30% of the total population is composed of young people between 15 and 30 years old. Studies show that:

  • Only 5% of Mexicans have the opportunity and ability to speak English .

  • Mexico is ranked 92nd in the ranking list of 112 English proficient countries.

  • 45% of all LinkedIn Premium jobs posted within the past three months mention the importance of communication skills.

  • Law in Mexico considers soft skills as competencies, but there are no institutional instruments to develop them.

  • Compared with the results from 2019, many of the skills where respondents report the biggest increases in focus fall into two categories: social and emotional skills (which account for three of the five biggest increases) and advanced cognitive skills

  • Speaking English and developing soft skills increase professional emancipation and allow people to access better job opportunities

Target Group

Youth between 15 and 30 years old from Morelia and the metropolitan area, with the support of local institutions, organizations, and schools and with the participation of the international youth community.

Proposed Solution

It is important to raise awareness about the skills needed for the future and promote different activities with local actors such as organizations and institutions with the participation of the international community in order to give an international perspective.

Global Shapers from Morelia Hub in coordination with its allies at "Impacta México" implement activities such as workshops, talks, civic activities and more, in local institutions (schools and organizations) to achieve the described objectives. All this with the participation of the youth of the international community to provide the international perspective and strengthen cooperation allies.

We will train 20 international volunteers on topics of peace and human rights to become peace ambassadors and promoters of our city in the world and each volunteer is expected to impact directly a youth community of 100 people. At the end of the project the expectation is to impact around 3,000 young people.

 Objectives and Impact Areas

  • Reskill for the future: provide all people with quality education, skills and jobs to ensure no one is left behind, along with promoting new standards of work, digital literacy, online safety and more.

  • Create inclusive communities: advocate for human rights and disrupt harmful stereotypes on gender, race, sexual orientation, disability and more.

  • Deliver basic needs: support vulnerable communities, respond to local disasters, take humanitarian action, end hunger, fight extreme poverty and more

Desired Impact:

We will train 20 international volunteers on topics of peace and human rights to become peace ambassadors and promoters of our city in the world and each volunteer is expected to impact directly a youth community of 100 people. At the end of the project the expectation is to impact around 3,000 young people.

Two kind of activities will be developed to promote the subtopics described hereinabove:

1- Volunteering with social impact.

  • Workshops about multiculturality and soft skills with the participation of the international community to increase awareness around global issues affecting the quality of education.

  • Coordination with local organizations and institutions to run programs to develop soft skills in youth (like languages, adaptability, solution oriented, and more).

2- Experiences to improve skills.

  • Learning cultural matters.

  • Participation in the organization of a forum as a volunteer.

  • Create inclusive communities through intercultural experiences

All the activities described will be developed with an international approach.

The objective of the project is to impact the youth of Morelia and ensure that young people learn soft skills to be prepared for the future. These skills will seed the opportunities to get better jobs in Mexico and abroad. The idea is to be able to prepare a 15 years teenager to apply for a top university in Mexico over the course of 3 years, allowing him/her to develop and acquire skills such as critical thinking, interpersonal communication, etc.

Impacta Mexico is still working after the first 6 months of the project (february to june). The objective of Impacta Mexico is to work through a civil association with the aim of working with the youth international community and Morelia Hub is going to focus on the cultural immersion and exchange experience.
