Library4Education

Summary

Library4Education is a literacy program targeted towards secondary school students in hard-to-reach, marginalized communities in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nigeria.

Problem Statement

Nigeria has a lower-than-expected educational achievement given its moderately high per capita income. According to the World bank GEM report, Nigeria’s literacy rate in 2020 was 62.02%, a 10.94% increase from 2018. An enabling learning environment plays a key role in improving the learning outcome of students. However, most public schools, especially schools in rural communities, lack well-equipped school infrastructures, such as libraries. The library is the heart of any educational institution which enables it to fulfill its educational objectives. 80% of public schools in Nigeria lack a standard and well-equipped library which has contributed to disinterest in reading and poor academic performance amongst primary and secondary school students in rural communities.
