Mitigating Human - Elephant Conflicts in Zimbabwe (Project ZHOU)

The project seeks to mitigate losses suffered by local farmers through resolving human-elephant conflicts and raising awareness on the importance of conservation to promote life on land and healthy ecosystems. Studies have shown that farmers can make use of chili pepper or bee farming to scare away away elephants from thier fields. Chili pepper can be grown in the boundaries of farms to ensure that elephants will not get closer and destroy crops. Bee farming has also been used to keep away elephants. This project is aimed at targeting farmers living in areas affected by human-elephant conflict in Victoria Falls.

Goals

Training Local Farmers - the hub with support from partners will train farmers in Victoria Fall who are affected by this challenge.

Campaigns on chili and bee farming - the hub will establish partnerships with local radio stations to raise awareness on mitigating food losses to farmers through chili and bee farming.

Engaging students in mitigating the climate crisis - the hub will work with students in designing essay writing competitions which promote research and dialogue on ending human elephant conflicts as a measure of promoting food security. Students will also be involved in participating in poetry, art and quiz competitions which will help in making conservation fun and easy to understand.

Community Engagement - the hub will work with the local authority, local chiefs and village heads in spreading the conservation message to their communities. Communities need to sensitized on on the importance of conservation despite the devastating expriences they suffer as a result of human elephant conflict.
