Problem statement

The Anchieta Grajaú Institute (IAG) had over half of its land occupied by precarious housing settlements. There was massive deforestation of the surrounding vegetation in an Environmental Protection Area, as well as the construction of houses extremely close to riverbeds. Although IAG managed to negotiate and reclaim some of the land, the relationship with the community remains complex, and the area continues to deteriorate.

Target group

The students of Instituto Anchieta Grajaú will participate in planting initiatives benefiting the entire Grajaú community and the city of São Paulo. The project's scale has a regional impact.

Proposed solution

The São Paulo II Hub will assist the Institute in implementing an agroforestry project. The planting actions aim to restore the degraded and deforested area. The idea is for the community to take ownership of the agroforestry, enjoying its outcomes, caring for it, and fostering a different relationship with the institute and nature.

Hub activities

The members of the São Paulo II Hub are organizing planting actions, engaging shapers and community members (currently, students from the planting courses at IAG). Over 100 trees have already been planted in 3 days of work. The funding we secured through the Climate Reality Project is enabling these actions.

Short and long-term goals

In the short term, we aim to organize increasingly larger initiatives, planting all tree lines by April and subsequently establishing the orchards. In the long term, the Hub aims to contribute to the restoration of the environmental protection area and raise awareness among the population regarding deforestation issues. Available metrics We intend to measure the number of trees planted, the number of people involved in the initiatives, the recovered area, and the communal garden area.
