Neela Chapa - Handcrafted Merchandise

A micro-initiative by Jaipur hub to support local artisans by helping them design and curate hub accessories and merchandise. The first merchandise in line is a handcrafted shirt made out of 100% organic Khadi cotton and by using a 1000-year-old traditional technique of block printing native to Rajasthan. The motifs on the shirt are hand-printed by using wooden blocks especially carved for making this merchandise and azo- free indigo dye making this merchandise au naturale. The colours and the design of the shirt were carefully chosen and bear a particular significance. White is indicative of peace, the indigofera (blooming flower) motif signifies inclusive development and the wave pattern (also known as leheriya) on the sleeves represents gender parity. Each shirt preserves an untold story of pride and tradition of Rajasthan hidden in its design. Listen closely and it hums the sound of charkhas3, stamping of wooden blocks and laughter of artisans. Handmade with love in the Sanganeri region of Rajasthan each shirt takes 1.5 days to make and is packaged in a jute bag which doubles up as an eco-friendly laptop sleeve. This not-for-profit initiative is being jointly undertaken by Spandan Weavers and Global Shapers Jaipur hub and all the proceeds from the sale of the merchandise will directly go to the artisans involved in creating the merchandise.

This initiative would drive value for the artisans in the following ways: - It will lead to 60-70% increase in the annual income of the artisans. - It will create long-term sustainable livelihood opportunities at the source. The proceeds from the sale of the merchandise would be utilized to - - To further train and upskill the artisans. - Upgrade their existing working conditions - Bring them closer to financial inclusivity and assured healthcare, by opening their bank accounts and buying health insurance for each.
