The numbers of vehicles in Erbil city increased by 11 times between 2006 and 2011 and the numbers of power generators increased by 76 % between 2003 and 2012 which has resulted in the emission of huge quantities of CO2 annually, high temperatures, and air pollution.

To help support environmental regeneration, the Erbil Hub successfully lobbied the government to levy a small amount of tax (USD 10) per year during their annual Periodic Vehicle Inspection process to offset their gas emissions. The Erbil Hub will manage a small yearly budget from the project revenues to fund bi-yearly grant competitions to support environment protection ideas, projects, technologies, and small businesses.
