Old Age Home Connect

The Indore Hub visited the Ashram in the early months of 2019 to see how members could help the people who are over the age of 60 and have been left at the Ashram by their family members. Shapers found out that the people at the home have been dealing with a lot of mental health issues because of abandonment and being secluded from day to day lives. When the members of the hub visited the Ashram the first day, the people of the home barely communicated and said the only people who come to visit them give them food and leave. “Nobody cares about us anymore, we are just left here to live”, one said.

The Indore Hub Shapers saw this as an opportunity and decided to help the people of the Ashram to get better mentally so that they can enjoy their lives and not feel isolated. Hub members started conducting monthly activities to keep the older people engaged. Activities held at the Ashram include:

  • Bhajan Sandhya with the help of the Roshni Foundation. Roshni Foundation and its members held the Bhajan Sandhya with a lot of ease and change was immediately visible as well as excitement in the eyes of the elderly. They looked alive, and one said that they had not had anyone else sing and dance with them in eight years.

  • Health workshop with the help of Dr. Divyanshu Goyal (Orthopedic Surgeon at SNG Hospital). He checked all the people at the Ashram and prescribed them with proper treatment.

  • Movie Night and saw ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ – a black and white movie made in 1963 and a blockbuster hit at the time – with all the members of the Ashram.

After a whole year of activities and spending time with the members of the Ashram, the Indore Shapers saw major changes in mental health and conversation amongst the members and the caretaker. Global Shapers Indore Hub committed to providing care for the elderly at an old age home in the city.
