Rebuild Pakistan - Flood Relief Initiative

Overview : Pakistan is facing devastating flooding due to unprecedented rains. This climate change nightmare has caused a nationwide destruction affecting 33 million people across Pakistan, 81 districts have been officially notified as calamity hit leaving millions of people in relief camps. These record breaking floods has caused 1,400 + deaths, destroyed or damaged over 1.1 million houses, 750,000 Livestock deaths, 20,000 damaged schools and 1.2 million acres of agricultural. As per the initial estimates provisional cost of this catastrophe is at least $15 billion. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres states “I have seen many humanitarian disasters in the world, but I have never seen climate carnage on this scale”. Currently, rescue and relief efforts are being done by relevant authorities, volunteers and local NGOs are stepping up to provide best possible help but the magnitude of this disaster that is so huge that it will take months to get back to normalcy.


 


Our Efforts: 


Global Shapers Islamabad Hub is working with Zariya and a few other organizations to contribute to this relief efforts. Our campaign “Rebuild Pakistan” aims to provide emergency relief in the initial phase and then rehabilitation in terms of providing household items and setting up schools in affected areas. The hub is working with local partners to provide assistance as per the need of distributing food packs, shelter, sleeping bags, female hygiene kits and other nonfood items.


The hub intends to continue its efforts to help fellow Pakistanis. It is imperative that the country build structures and policies to control the risks and facilitate be better managed. Alongside immediate relief, the aim is to work on foresight and strategy for the rehabilitation. Millions have lost their earnings in the form of cattle, agriculture and labor. While they recoup, support like social protection, investments and alternatives are required. The private sector and gig economies should do focused recruitment.


 


The objectives of the project are:



  • Rebuild and supportaffected schools across Pakistan 

  • Build Capacity Building Centres to help affectees with rehabilitation 

  • Support 20,000 flood affectees

  • Distribution of 5,000 food packs
