REBUILDING KABUI KHULLEN

On the wee hours of 4th January’2016, Manipur was shaken by an earthquake of 6.8 richter scale. The epic centre was in a village called Kabui Khullen Part 1 at Noney District, the village was inhabited by about 400 villagers of 55 families. The village was no longer safe and the villagers needed to be evacuated to a new location before the monsoon arrived. Hence, the problem statement was ‘55 Families (400 members) in Kabui Khullen Part 1 needs to evacuate their home/village so that they can be away from the threat left by the devastating earthquake.’ The entire village of the affected area was the target group.

Imphal Hub proposed the following solutions:-

-          Help in planning and designing the entire layout of the village.

-          Introduce sustainable and ecofriendly toilets for all the houses in the new village.

-          Inclusion of a community clinic, library and park in the new village.

Activities undertaken were:-

1. Discussed the issues and problems of the beneficiary with the beneficiary themselves and Identified the area which Imphal Hub can help/contribute after primary survey and findings.

2. Started a Public Fund Raising and sponsorship of Solar Lamps to manufacturers.

3. Inspect and asses the identified area for construction.

4. Consulted a local urban planning architectural firm to design the new village and present to the village chiefs and family members.

5. Presented the designed village to the village community, village chief , Bishops, Pastors and other donors.

Short term goals were:-

Raised enough funds to begin cutting and levelling of village plot by hiring machineries.

Facilitate in providing shelter at the new construction site.

Raised enough funds to allot eco friendly toilet for all the 55 houses.

Received a solar panel with lamp each for all the 55 houses sponsored from a local Samaritan.

Believers Church agreed to fund the proposed design of the village, amounting to 2.5 crores approx (350,000 $)

In the long run the project has enabled the inhabitants of New Kabui Khullen to enjoy living their new life in a well planned and organised village. The villagers are aware of the importance of eco toilets, solar lights, community library and park. We believe, the environment will stimulate sustainable living and respect nature.

Biggest collaborator was KAI Architects (urban planning and design architectural firm) designed the new village. Believers’ Church funded the proposed design of the new village and carried forward the construction to completion.
