Recycling Knowledge: Youth as Agents of Change

Problem Statement

The improper disposal of waste poses a serious problem, causing significant impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, public health, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions, among others. The issue of electronic waste, which requires specialized treatment, is exacerbated by the lack of understanding among the population of Ribeirão Preto regarding the need to dispose of them in specific locations, worsened by the scarcity of accessible collection points. Additionally, our project aims to address another critical issue: the lack of resources to implement projects and elective courses in high school and primary education. This gap results in deficiencies in the school curriculum, a challenge originating from the structure of the Brazilian basic education curriculum. Our approach aims not only to solve the problem of improper electronic waste disposal but also to contribute to the improvement of the education system, providing valuable opportunities for students.

Target Group

The project focuses its efforts on collaborating with primary and secondary schools, primarily public ones, and establishing partnerships with civil society organizations that work in social assistance for children and adolescents. Thus, the target audience primarily includes young people aged 11 to 17, with their families and stakeholders of these institutions being mobilized.

Proposed Solution

The project aims to conduct environmental education workshops, with a special focus on electronic waste. The proposal is to provide an educational and formative approach, allowing children and adolescents to understand the topic more deeply. We seek to empower these young people so that they can incorporate sustainable practices into their lives and positively influence their families, aiming to reduce the improper disposal of these materials and promote a more responsible management of electronic waste. Additionally, the school will become a collection environment to facilitate disposal.

Hub Activities

Currently, we are in the phase of project elaboration and structuring, so the main activities include: Mapping interested schools and NGOs. Validation of concerns through interviews with educational institutions. Development of content for workshops. Waste collection plan and understanding of the process.

Short and Long-Term Goals

Short-term goal: Implementation of workshops in 1 school and 1 NGO by the first quarter of 2024.

Medium and long-term goal: Implementation of workshops in 10 schools and 5 NGOs by the end of 2024. Implementation of 15 collection points and regularity in waste disposal at these points by 2024.
