Reforesting Footprints

Problem Statement

The Climate Crisis is one of the greatest threats that humankind faces nowadays and we are already suffering its negative impacts.

Target Group

Young citizens of Mar del Plata

Proposed Solution:

Reforesting Footprints, a project launched by the Mar del Plata Hub, pretends to raise awareness about this global issue through urban tree planting, after calculating the carbon footprint of Global Shapers Community Mar del Plata Hub’s members. Coupled with tree planting, some advices to reduce our carbon footprint from home will also be given. The benefits of this initiative are not limited to landscaping and urban aesthetics, it will also contribute to the social and environmentally greening of our city, acting at a local scale and mobilizing, in the first stage, youth people.

Hub Activities

The first step on our path is to calculate the Hub’s carbon footprint with the “WWF Footprint Calculator '' provided by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Once we have the tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e), the number of trees that should be planted is estimated considering that a single tree absorbs approximately 20kg of CO2 per year.

Short & Long-Term Goals/Results

  • Compensate a minimum of 50% of the Hub's emissions.

  • Influence local communities to do the same and use our Hub as a platform for executing the compensation. We listed a set of proposed actions that also contribute to carbon footprint reduction and can be carried out from home.

  • Execute the project at least 2 times a year.
