Problem Statement

School dropout is a big challenge in our city ( Belo Horizonte), increasing due to the problems generated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many students are not engaged in school activities, preferring not to keep their studies. Teachers have trouble in dealing with online environments to teach their subject.

Dropouts occur when a student who enrolls at the beginning of the year stops attending school after a moment. Dropout occurs when a student who went to school in one year fails to enroll at the beginning of the following school year.

Of the nearly 50 million Brazilians between the ages of 14 and 29, more than 20% - that is, 10.1 million young people - have not completed some of the stages of basic education (which includes elementary and secondary education).

The main causes for dropping out of school are the need to work, lack of interest in classes and pregnancy. The vast majority (71.7%) of this contingent of young people is black or brown.

A evasão escolar é um grande desafio em nossa cidade (Belo Horizonte), aumentando devido aos problemas gerados pela pandemia do COVID-19. Muitos alunos não estão engajados nas atividades escolares, preferindo não manter os estudos. Os professores têm dificuldade em lidar com ambientes online para ensinar sua matéria.

O abandono ocorre quando um aluno que se matriculou no início do ano deixa de frequentar a escola a partir de um dado momento. Já a evasão ocorre quando o aluno que foi à escola em um ano deixa de se matricular no início do ano letivo seguinte

Dos quase 50 milhões de brasileiros entre 14 e 29 anos, mais de 20% — ou seja, 10,1 milhões de jovens — não completaram alguma das etapas da educação básica (que engloba os ensinos fundamental e médio).

As principais causas apontadas para o abandono escolar foram necessidade de trabalhar, desinteresse pelas aulas e gravidez. A ampla maioria (71,7%) desse contingente de jovens é negra ou parda.

The Retention Lab - Laboratório de Retenção project launched by the Belo Horizonte Hub consist in building capacity among teachers, empowering them to deal with and reduce school dropout. Helping teachers to build in their students a strong mindset about the importance of education in their lives.
