SD Peduli Alam: Planting seeds of interest and awareness about the environment for primary school students in Jakarta

The SD Peduli Alam project aims to increase the knowledge exposure about the environment to primary school students in Jakarta. The hub hopes to plant seeds of interest such that this will be a topic students can keep in mind in their future work. The material will introduce students to the fundamental basics about the environment and sustainability. It will also cover the most relevant issues faced in Jakarta, such as waste and pollution. Lessons and materials will be delivered in Bahasa Indonesia to students from Grade 4 at a local public school.

The hub has currently completed 3 teaching modules over the course of 3 weeks in February 2023. Each meeting was attended by 64 students, along with their homeroom teachers, the project team, and some volunteers. The three topics covered were: 1) Environmental issues and climate change, 2) Waste management, and 3) Air pollution and its effect to our health.

During the lessons, students were always enthusiastic and interactive. The lessons were a mix between theory along with very practical and interactive activities. The children have integrated the crafts created during the lessons in their classroom to continually keep environmental awareness. The teachers also gave good feedback regarding the lesson materials and format. This project is jointly coordinated by both the hub and a local non-profit organisation tackling waste management, Nara Synergy.
