Shaping Diamond Economies

The Jwaneng diamond mine is the richest diamond mine in the world and is located in south-central Botswana, a country whose economy is heavily dependent on the diamond-mining sector. The Gaborone Hub partnered with De Beers Group Botswana to execute an online campaign to engage youth in conversation around the mining industry, in particular: green mining, gender equality (employing women in a male-dominated industry), conserving natural resources, and the impact of diamonds on our economies. Gaborone Hub aims to raise awareness among the local community about the importance of green mining and hopes to encourage women to participate in the diamond industry.

Goals:

  • Collaborating with other hubs. The Gaborone Hub aimed to partner with at least 5 other hubs who have active mining industries within their country, to help amplify the conversation.

  • Identify how women and youth can play an active role in the mining industry, what kind of opportunities exist for them within the mining industry.

  • Identify steps Botswana and other mining countries are taking to become a green mining country, specifically what can be done to preserve natural resources and continue to create employment.
