Shaping Fashion Lugano

Fashion is a vibrant industry that employs hundreds of millions, generates significant revenues, and touches almost everyone, everywhere. While it represents at its highest levels the merging of art craft, personal expression and life style, it has also developed a culture of “take-make- dispose” consumption that makes Fashion the second most polluting industry in the world. The Global Shapers Lugano Hub is launched in Ticino, the Swiss Fashion Valley, Shaping Fashion: a global initiative seeing the participation of more than 30 hubs from 18 different countries and aiming to promote a sustainable transformation of the fashion industry and foster the discussion on the sector’s social and environmental impacts.

Living in a territory strongly influenced by the presence of major fashion brands the Global Shapers Lugano Hub decided to join Shaping Fashion, the Global Shapers’ worldwide initiative to promote the discussion on the impact of fashion and to scale sustainable transformations in the industry. Thanks to the support and knowledge shared by Fashion Revolution Switzerland, Lugano Hub is giving its contribution through two main activities:

  • Fashion Footprint Calculator Launch: www.fashionfootprint.org On 1 April 2019, Lablaco - a global platform committed to making fashion circular- with the support of the Global Shapers Lugano Hub launched the “Fashion Footprint Calculator”. The new online platform allows any user to easily calculate its own fashion footprint. Knowledge and awareness are key elements to understand how we can drive change in the fashion industry starting from our everyday fashion consumption. Thanks to informative flyers distributed during the Fashion Innovation Week taking place in Lugano in the same days, the Lugano Hub has reached a broad base of stakeholders.

  • Digital and Sustainability: how we can shape the future of fashion – Presentation @Digital Creativity Challenge, Fashion Innovation Week – Lugano, 5 April 2019 A new awareness and a new sensibility are fundamental to shape the future of fashion. That is why the Global Shapers Lugano Hub presented the topic of fashion’s social and environmental sustainability during a challenge involving more than 50 students from Swiss and Italian Universities. The interest raised during the speech and the following discussion will be just the starting point to continue involving students and young professionals of the field in our region.
