Shaping the City of Chicago's Advisory Councils

Chicago Global Shapers are advising the City of Chicago's Office of the Mayor on the creation of new Advisory Councils focused on assisting the City in lifting up the voices of residents and turning intention into action. The Advisory Councils will serve as liaisons between city government and community partners, recommend changes and improvements in policies, systems and structures, and work alongside City and community leaders to implement solutions that are responsive to community priorities. The five Advisory Councils are:

  • Advisory Council on Racial Equity and Justice

  • Advisory Council on LGBTQ+ Communities

  • Advisory Council on New Americans

  • Advisory Council on Veterans

  • Advisory Council on Women

Advisory Councils will be accelerators for action - not just talk. Each Advisory Council will identify and uplift community needs and interests, specifically highlighting 2-3 areas for immediate action.

Goals:

Chicago Global Shapers are supporting the City's Policy leads and Community Engagement team to develop an equitable and inclusive application and recruitment process, onboarding sessions, and an arc of meetings for the first year of moving from talk to action.

Progress:

*Chicago Global Shapers developed the application content to recruit new Advisory Council members

*We facilitated conversations with Mayor's Office staff to support internal alignment on the goals, processes and structures for the Advisory Councils.

*We researched best practices and created recommended selection criteria, review rubics, and selection process steps that were adopted and implemented by the Mayor's Office.

*We designed and facilitated the first-ever kickoff meeting of Advisory Council Chairs (community leads) and the Mayor's Policy staffers (policy leads).
