Shaping VAMOS

Our mission is to support students from Texas border towns interested in pursuing medicine. We aim to provide individual pre-med mentorship; promote access to clinical and non-clinical extracurricular opportunities; and offer financial support in an effort to increase the proportion of medical students hailing from underrepresented communities. Serving the RGV, Laredo, El Paso regions 36 medical student mentors (M1-M4) 15 students have ties to region 36 college students Freshmen: 3 Sophomores: 2 Juniors: 4 Seniors: 12 Graduated: 5 3 students applied to Medical School since 2022 and all 3 were accepted!

1-on-1 Mentorship: We prioritize matching students and mentors from the same region. The mentors review pre-made PowerPoint presentations on a topic based on mentees’ individualized mentorship schedules. Most mentors stay with the mentee throughout their college career. Mentors and mentees are expected to have a formal meeting once a month, but most mentees and mentors stay in constant communication and meet more frequently if needed. Individualized

Curriculum: Our curriculum was developed by Sanji Suresh, who holds a Master’s in Education and is an alumni of Teach for America. When students are first accepted into the program, the Curriculum Coordinator develops an individualized mentorship schedule for students, which they follow throughout their college career. VAMOS has over 26 pre-made PowerPoint presentations covering a wide array of topics.

Professional Development: VAMOS has developed a database of shadowing opportunities for each region as well as resources for summer research opportunities. Oftentime, mentors are able to connect students with their own contacts in the region as well.

VAMOS Scholarship: Since our inception, we have focused on streamlining operations, developing a network of clinical opportunities, and managing growth. Now, we would like to provide students with financial support to help them with medical school applications.

Our goal is to be able to provide funding to 6 students who are either preparing to take the MCAT or apply to medical school.
