Southside Market

Problem & Solution

A social venture on the mission to increase healthy food access and business ownership opportunities in Greater Chatham, the Southside of Chicago, and beyond!

Goal & Activity

Southside Market is a micro-grocery and cafe franchise (launching 2022) providing healthy food access and business ownership opportunities on the South side of Chicago and beyond. At Southside Market, the project features affordable fresh produce while prioritizing local sourcing, hiring and ownership. The cafe also serves as a gathering space and the rotating menu is an opportunity to showcase local entrepreneurs and chefs.

The key differentiators in this efforts to combat food apartheid are size and flexibility; the project is not another big-box grocery store. The 1300-1700 sq. ft., lean-operating stores can uniquely meet the needs of South side residential communities. The project also plans to offer produce delivery to key locations such as nearby senior centers and churches. Equally important, the model builds local wealth through employee profit sharing and the option to purchase equity and eventually become a franchise owner.

Target

The first store will be located in Greater Chatham. So far, two pilot pop-up markets have been held - engaging with 100+ residents and selling over 1K units of produce. As the venture is launched, customer insights will continue to drive every decision.
