Syensya Storya

As citizens of an archipelagic country, Filipinos need to understand the ocean better for our own survival. There are many tools to understand the oceans better but taking action to protect the ocean requires the use of these tools by different stakeholders. Including the understanding of the ocean in our lives does not happen overnight. For the team in Global Shapers Iloilo, the understanding the ocean should start at an early age through stories written in the local language, Hiligaynon. In response to the declaration of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), the hub would like to tell stories on Climate Change, Sustainability and 7 Marine Literacy Principles in Hiligaynon for children ages 7-12 years old. Youth ages 13-19 years old will learn through creation of illustrations for the stories. The hub hopes that by sharing science stories in the regional language the project will be able to help educators to raise awareness among students regarding Climate Change, Sustainability and 7 Marine Literacy Principles and encourage children to do small acts for the environment. Most of the science stories will be in the context of Iloilo, hence, the hub envisions that this will contribute in opening the dialogue between Iloilo and the world regarding Climate Change, Sustainability and 7 Marine Literacy Principles. The science stories will be written by Global Shapers Iloilo Hub members, youth organization members and selected scientists and illustrated by youth organization members. The Syensya Storya output will be distributed to selected elementary schools and/or sold in Ilonggo cafes/bookstores.
