Temporal

Problem Statement

The Brazilian Prison System suffers from a structural crisis - not only in terms of public safety issues and obstacles but also in lacking the efficiency to act on resocialization of former inmates. The Prison System structure urges for a new management model and innovative solutions to address basic needs of more than 770 000 people locked in the system - the third biggest prisoners population in the world. In terms of resocialization, the system presents serious fractures, especially concerning the lack of professional development of prisoners so they can restart their lives when out of the system. Today, former prisoners suffer from lack of qualifications and very limited access to important future of work tools. These obstacles are deepened by the stigma and prejudice suffered by prisoners.

Target Group

Former inmates from Curitiba and Metropolitan region.

Proposed Solution

To tackle these obstacles and address some of the challenges affecting this important population of prisoners, the Curitiba Hub is developing the "Temporal" Project, hoping to build a bridge between the outdated system and the future of work.

Hub Activities

Temporal (which means both "Thunderstorm" and "Temporary" in Portuguese) is a project focused on professional development, that aims to empower, teach and develop future of work professional capacities (soft skills as tools of resocialization) on prison units in Curitiba and its Metropolitan Region. The goal is to help promote social reintegration of former inmates and also raise social awareness on inmate invisibility and the obstacles of resocialization.

These goals will be accomplished articulating connections between educational institutions, the Prison System and the State, promoting mechanisms of empowerment and training on future of work abilities for prisoners who are living within the system. We believe that, to address these goals properly, it's essential to also raise social awareness on the consequences of stigma and prejudice suffered by the inmates population. These obstacles hinder former inmates to access a new life through work. To tackle these obstacles, the Temporal project will also act as a communication network, through social media and a documentary, produced by us.

To reach those goals, we will act on two paths:

  1. Training inmates and developing their professional skills in relation with the future of work

  2. Raise awareness on the issues related to stigma and prejudice of former inmates through social media positioning and a documentary
