The Culture of Tây Nguyên Community

The Central Highlands of Vietnam is inhabited by the ethnic minority of Ede whose Space of Gong culture was recognized as a Masterpiece of the Intangible Heritage of Humanity By UNESCO in 2005. However, the majority of the youth of Ede have no interest in their traditional culture, heightening the serious risks of culture loss. The aim of this project was to raise the Ede youth’s awareness of about preserving and promoting the beautiful cultural identity of their people. From 20 January to 10 May 2020, a Gong playing class of more than 16 Ede aging from 9 to 12 was run with 2 Gong lessons on each weekend. The project team also established a Facebook fanpage to share the Ede’s cultural values with the Ede youth by publishing pictures, clips and posts related to the Ede’s culture and people.

The culture of Tây Nguyên Community was aimed at:

  • Raising the Ede youth’s awareness of about preserving and promoting the beautiful cultural identity of their people.

  • Offering the Ede youth the Gong classes with the Ede Artisans who master the art of playing gongs to the Ede aging under 18.

  • Sharing the Ede’s cultural values with the Ede youth by publishing pictures, clips and posts related to the Ede’s culture and people on a fanpage.
